*How To Set And Achieve A Goal* - Find Out Exactly What Prevents You From Being Successful And What You Can Do To Change It In The Next 15 Minutes!

In my previous post for day 2, I wrote about Beliefs. On day 3, we continued with how to change our beliefs and how to use our sub-modalities. Because sub-modalities are difficult to explain in a blog post, so I have no choice but to ignore it again.

Changing Beliefs: Some of us think that beliefs cannot be changed because they are true. Yes, your beliefs are always true to you but it may not be the absolute truth (or reality). Actually, beliefs are opinions and generalizations we form about ourselves and the world around us. That’s why whatever we choose to believe becomes true for us. Fortunately, since they aren’t absolutely true, we can change or even eliminate them, aim ourselves with empowering beliefs.

To create new empowering beliefs and eliminate limiting beliefs, we must first understand how beliefs are formed. It seems to be complicated but in fact it’s very simple. A belief is first created from an idea that is reinforced by some evidence. Because we start to form such a belief, we tend to find more evidences in our daily life that support it, and unconsciously choose to ignore the other evidences that go against it. With time, that belief becomes stronger and stronger, and keeps us within its boundary so that it becomes true for us. Understand how it works, we can follow these steps to eliminate limiting belief and arm ourselves with a new empowering belief:

  • Identify the limiting belief and the new empowering belief to replace it.

  • Find enough reasons to eliminate the limiting belief.

  • Challenge the evidences that support it (you need some skills which are taught during the program to do this).

  • Find new evidences to support the new empowering belief.

  • Future pace and associate all the benefits of having that new belief.

Reframing: It’s a powerful tool used by most (if not all) great leaders. Every event has multiple meanings depending on our frame of reference. The meaning we choose to give is the meaning we create. Note that reframing doesn’t change reality, but change our point of view on reality. The Law of Polarity shows that anything that seems negative from a perspective, when framed from another perspective, can become positive. For example, young people are inexperienced (negative), so they’re more creative and tend to think out of the box (positive). As you can see, reframing changes a negative thing into a positive one by just changing the frame of reference used to perceive it. During module 1, we learnt about content and context reframing only (there’re a lot more to learn in module 1).

  • With content reframing, we ask ourselves questions such as “What else could this mean?”, “How would this be beneficial?”

  • With context reframing, we ask ourselves questions such as “In a different time or place, how would this be beneficial?”

Actually, I had used reframing countless number of times before I learnt about it, but. Some of you should feel the same. However, it doesn’t mean that we won’t benefit at all from knowing reframing. By learning about it, we can bring our reframing skill to a new level and use it consciously to motivate ourselves and others.

Visualization: Modern medical science has shown that the human mind cannot tell the difference between a real and a vivid imagined experience. Whether you physically see, hear, touch or taste something or you vividly imagine it, the same neurological impulses are activated within our nervous system. During this day 3, we learnt a lot about applications of visualization in real life. I must say they were all very interesting experiences.

Values: Our decisions and actions are driven by the fact that we keep moving towards positive emotions, and at the same time, moving away from negative emotions. The positive emotions that we move towards called Towards Values. The negative emotions we move away from called Away-from Values. All of us rank and/or define values differently. Hence, we make very different decisions and take different actions given the same situation. While goals give us a direction, values are fuel that propels us towards our goals. It’s helpful to know our values, and it’s helpful to know others’ values as well. When we discover a person’s values, we can predict how he/she will decide or act in specific situation. If we’re able to shift one’s ranking/definition of values, we will dramatically change the way one behaves and the result he/she produces. Finally, values aren’t fixed (both in ranking and definition). We change our value’s ranking and definition unconsciously over time with our increasing age, experience, new role, new situation, etc. Therefore, we can choose to consciously change our values’ ranking/definition to make them serve us better or resolve conflict among values. We can change our values and lock them in by:

  • Committing to these new values

  • Being in constant touch with them

  • Emotionally charging them by visualization

  • Living by these new values

Finally,  day 3 endend with another very inspiring clip. I must say watching it create a tremendous impact on my beliefs system.
