After two-year planning, we have finally made up our mind on one lovely morning in May - we will buy a house. A brand new flat from HDB! Yay! ![]()
We went to HDB website and browsing the flats on offer. Very disappointed I must say (or maybe I was too choosy
)! After checking the location, the lease commencement date, the price, the design, blah blah… we only liked the flats at Farrer Park. The rest are either too old or too far or too expensive in our opinions.
Never mind, there were totally 4 selling units at Farrer Park. We sure could get it, at least that’s what we thought. Actually, I chose another Bedok flat for back-up in case we couldn’t get the Farrer Park or they turned out not like what we imagined. Ok, let’s go down and check it out.
Oh my god, I love it, love the field, love the park, love the green window, the few-min walk mrt…
We told ourselves that this would be our home and didn’t bother going to check out other places. 4 units mah, sure get one!!!!!!
Happily and excitingly and eagerly, we applied for the HDB ballot. $10 fee, nah, it’s nothing compared to our dream home. Hope we get a good queue number!
Our HDB ballot queue came out! 495 out of 700 applications!!!!
Die lah! There were 494 people before us! How “lucky” we were!
Optismictic as we were always, we consoled ourselves that it would be okay, there were a lot of houses (about 150 actually). We tried hard to forget the fact that there were about 500 people fighting over 150 houses!!!!!!!!!!
Keep praying and praying !!!!!!!!!!![]()
The third day after the ballot results, all our lovely Farrer Park were taken, leaving us heart-broken,
! It’s still another month to our HDB appointment date !!!!!!!!

Horaayy..there are 2 comment(s) for me so far ;)
Hey, how buying a house in Singapore works? Are you guys bidding for a house? Is it brand-new or used or foreclosed? Is it an auction or a ballot? Looks like houses in Singapore are so scarce, huh? In US, we just have to bid when buying foreclosed houses. They’re kinda cheap, but not always.
I’d admit that buying a house is one of the most important jobs. Others could be getting married, getting babies, buying cars… Could you imagine my colleague did all of those within a year? Firstly, he got married, then bought new cars, got a baby and bought a house.
Tell us something about that dream house. Such as how many sqr. ft. (or sqr. m.)? how many rooms? stories?…
Can’t wait to read next chapters and see the photos.
Good luck.
Hi Cyrus,
Thanks for reading and commenting and asking It really encourages me to write next chapters…
In Singapore, we need to bid for houses sold by HDB (Housing Development Board). The houses can be brand new or repurchased (means the owners sold back the houses to HDB).
What do “foreclosed houses” mean? I never heard of this term in Singapore :).
It’s a ballot. Applicants submit the applications for buying houses from HDB. HDB will ballot the applications and produce the queue numbers for applicants. Based on the queue numbers, HDB then arrange appointments for applicants to choose the houses. Who get the later appointments will have less chances to choose good houses. That’s us!!! ;(
Ya, buying houses in Singapore is easy and difficult at the same time. It’s difficult to choose your ideal house because it’s easy for Singaporeans to buy a houses thanks to goverment subsidization. Complicated, huh?
Wow, your colleage is amazing! We still struggle with the housing issues (both buying and renting). Singapore property market is crazy now!
About our dream house, I also can’t wait to share with you all!!!!!!!! I will write faster to the chapter “sharing our dream house” then ^^.
The adventure is still long… but it’s worth the waiting!
