There are so many good reasons why you need to remember a person’s story. By requesting, remembering, reminding and repeating a person’s story, you are actually telling that person that “You are special to me“. As a result, you will become special to the person who shared a story with you, too.
-
Ask: Don’t hesitate. Ask a person to share his/her story even just after the introduction a few minutes. Use your own style like asking where he/she’s from, what he/she’s doing, etc…
-
Listen: Focus on the person while he/she is telling you a story. Listen with your entire mind and heart. Follow these few tips:
-
Make eye contact with the story-teller.
-
Be attentive - eye focus, no obvious face express when you hear something that you don’t agree with.
-
Don’t interrupt. Encourage the person to talk by saying “I see”, “Go on”…
-
Tell the person what you think you heard like “Let me see if I understand…”
-
-
Remember: Almost everyone can remember a story. “Principles fade, stories stay“. So, remembering a story is not difficult for us at all but it can make a big impact on people. We make them feel like million bucks.
Practice
-
Stop telling your stories. Listen to the story of others.
-
Bring up some aspect of a person’s story the next time you meet him/her like asking for the “ending”.
-
Remember, everyone loves to tell his story.
