Dale Carnegie - the author of the well-known book “How to win friends and influence people” - has written: Remember that a person’s name is to that person the sweetest and most important sound in any language. Isn’t it so true?
How pleasant it is when someone hears the sweetest sound (to them) from you! And how extremely annoying it is when your most important sound is pronounced wrongly! Just think about it. You know it’s true.
Now, let’s improve the skills of remembering names.
-
Recognize the value of a name: It’s very easy to value a name. Imagine someone calls you “Carol” when your name is Kate. “How on earth she gets that name on me?” - You annoyingly think. - “Sorry, I’m Kate.” - “Oh oh sorry Kate, blah blah“. Few days later, you heard “Carol, Carol“. Gruuu, this girl AGAIN. Are you starting angry now just only by imaging it? Think how people will get angry when you call their names wrongly or worse, don’t remember their names at all.
-
Use the SAVE method: Troubles with recalling names? Here’s how.
-
S - Say the name 3 times in conversation.
-
A - Ask a question about the name (ex. how it’s spelled?) or about the person.
-
V - Visualize the person’s prominent physical or personality feature.
-
E - End the conversation with the name.
-
-
In case of memory failure: Think about the situation which you met the person the first time or recently. Ask others to help. If you really can’t remember, admit it honestly with the person and NEVER ever forget that name again in the future.
-
Go easy with yourself if you forget: Keep practicing and you will be better in remembering names. But don’t be too hard on yourself when you fail.
Practice
-
Do whatever it takes to remember people’s names. Stop blaming bad memories.
