Actually, there’s always a house!
The question is whether you buy it or not. Forget the Farrer Park, forget the attractive near-by Tekka Market then .
We continued looking for another house since we still had about three weeks till our appointment date with HDB. To our surprises, most of the good houses and not-so-good houses had been taken by this time. How on earth it’s like that?
Search and search and search!!!!!!!!!!
Ah hah! There was one house with good location – Cantonment Close, near Outram Park and Tanjong Pagar MRT. Cantonment Close is at the centre of Singapore, and hence, the price is the highest. Hmm…
The reason we over-looked this house at the beginning because it was repurchased. Repurchased houses mean that the owners sold back the houses to HDB. And then HDB sell it again to us.
There are thousands of reasons why the owners return their houses (Nah, it’s not because the houses are defected
). Perhaps they don’t have enough money to pay for the housing loans. Perhaps the owners die (oh my…). We also heard of rumors that some owners borrow money from loan shark and run away. The loan shark will disturb whoever stays in the houses until they get the money. They don’t care who is who.
Those are enough reasons for us not to be fond of repurchased houses. Well, the last thing a buyer wants is a returned house, right?
Besides, this Cantonment Close house had been offered for nearly 5 years. No one had bought it. Why, why, why???
Was it because the price was too high or the floor area was too small (only 60 m2)? Was it because the house was repurchased? Or was it because of some untold tales?
I know I know, it did not sound very good. But we didn’t have many choices, did we? Let’s find the answers. Yes! With the neighbors.
Although the location is at the centre, it is nothing to compare with our bygone Farrer Park. We have to walk quite far from the MRT or have to take bus. By the way, I hate taking bus (will come back to this topic another day).
The house looks… small. The design is not ideal, too. There are a lot of windows at the living room (about 5). But they all open to the corridor, which means anyone who passes by can look into our house. Hmm… 1 minus point.
Close the windows and use curtains then, you may say. Well, yes, we can if we afford to turn on the aircon all day long. Hello, Singapore weather is super hot!
At this time, these types of window were our advantage. We could “paste” our nose on the glass to check out the design inside the house.
Oh, I forgot to mention that HDB never allows us to check out the real houses. We can only see the floor plan on the paper, the location, the price… So, if we lucky that the house has viewable windows, we can see more.
Damn it! We should have come in the morning. There was not enough sun light in the evening. Never mind, we could always come back. Let’s knock the neighbour door now!
Usually, I’m quite comfortable to start conversations with strangers. But knocking the doors this way made me feel weird. Knock knock knock… and wait wait wait… No one answered. Two times, only two doors. Haiz…
15 mins later while we were still trying our best to look into the house and discussing, one neighbor door opened. An old lady starred at us. No wonder it took her so long to open the door!
Mrs Lee is friendly and well-spoken. Thank God! We are so scared that the neighbor will speak Chinese with us. Mrs. Lee told us that there used to be an old lady staying in the house.
“Oh my god, what happened? Did she die in the house?” – we frightenly asked.
“No no, she got sick after about two months. So her children brought her to their house and returned this house to HDB”. – Mrs Lee replied.
~ ~ ~ Phew ~ ~ ~
“So, how many people had viewed and asked you about the house. How come no one bought it in 5 years?”
“There were a lot of people asking me before you. I think the price was too high for them”
Blah blah blah…
“Hope to see you again!”
Good neighbor, clean house history – we concluded.
Since we could not check out the house design due to the light, we went downstairs to look into other houses. We know that the design of HDB houses at the same building should be similar as long as they are the same types (3-room, 4-room, 5-room, executive flats). Most of the houses closed their doors at that time. We luckily found one opening door. But the design was too… ugly.
Ok, now:
- Location: checked
- History: checked
- Neighbor: checked
Only left the price and the design. Too expensive and too narrow for us.
The next morning, we went back to check out the house again. This time, we could see a lot inside the house. Actually, the house looked better in the morning. The previous owner did a lot for the house: nice floor, nice kitchen, nice wall-painting…. All still looked quite new.
There’s one thing you guys should know that HDB only sell the “blank” houses, which means only the house frames. We have to paint the walls, build the kitchen, the toilet, do the floor… everything after that. It’s call renovation. Renovation will cost you about S$10,000 minimum depending on the size of the house and how much and how beautiful you want it to become.
Since the previous owner renovated the house, we could save quite a lot of money. This is maybe one advantage of buying repurchased houses. However, not all owners renovate the houses before they return them to HDB.
Thus, the price was indeed not so expensive if we included the renovation cost. One thing still made us unhappy was that the house was too small for us.
When we were about to go back and make decision, we bumped into a family who came to view the house like us.
The next few days, the house was taken by that family (I guess). They have made the decision for us. It was still another 2 weeks to our appointment date!
Sigh…
