To inspire people, you need to appreciate them as someone they can become, far beyond who they are now. In other words, you give them a reputation to uphold. You give them something good to live up. People normally do more than they could when someone they respect tells them that they can. Say something like “Be an eagle”, “Go and fight them. Fight them well. Fight them proud”, etc.
How to give others a reputation to uphold?
- Have a high opinion of people: Your opinions on people will affect how they perform. If your boss thinks high of you, would you do things better according to what your boss expects? All people have some values and potential inside them. Find and express those.
- Look past their pasts and give them reputation for their futures: A person can stop growing and progressing just because of their negative names, lables and nicknames resulted from their pasts. Forget their pasts and see in people their hope for a new future.
- Give people a new name or nickname that speaks to their potential: People love to have nicknames that show their strength. For example: call a lovable daughter as “sweetie pie”, call a brave son as “soldier”. They will live up to the names given.
Practice
- Forget about a person’s past and focus on his/her’s potential in the future.
- Think about what’s unique, beautiful about that person and how to show it to others.
- Have high opinions of people and reinforce your opinions by actions.
- Remember, people can go far beyond what they can because someone believed in them and told them so.
